Not quite a year ago now, with some misgivings, but in a rather desperate situation, I bought a 1996 Mystique with 109,320 miles on it. On the way home tonight, the odometer will pass 136,000 miles. At this point, I am very pleased with this car. It runs quite well, and has been amazingly trouble-free. Perhaps this is normal for cars this modern, but based on my past experience with other cars, it seems remarkable that this one, with so many miles on it, does not yet burn or leak oil at all.
I did have to get the timing belt replaced on it, but I bought it knowing that it needed this. I have also had to make a few minor repairs of various sorts, and I need yet to replace the EGR valve, which seems to be sticking open at times.

Moonlight Blue 1996 Mercury Mystique GS , Zetec engine, ATX. No mods. (Well, OK, one mod. Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios. I liked the Tempo's radio better. That counts as a mod, doesn't it? I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare. I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars. Does this count as a mod? If so, I guess I have two mods. Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)
