i would just like to brag a little about my cheap '97 Mystique zetec auto. it just hit 100K miles. it runs like a danm top. it still has the original exhaust, wheel bearings, timing belt, water pump, etc. nothing has been changed but the battery. the only thing i can complain about are the rattly sway bar bushings. to top it off, it is a very rare color (portofino blue) with the factory 15" directional alloys with dunlops. very cool looking car. to ice the cake, i paid only $4500 for the thing from my mother in law with just 72K on it. of course it has a factory tach, rear dome light, and the usual only mercury stuff (read and weep contour owners). i used this forum to find the wheels and tires for cheap and have had nothing but good luck with them. they are very noisy though (dunlop d60 a2's). i am going to put new plugs, wires, and coil on it this weekend along with a new temp sending unit. but i just wanted to brag a little. a nice little otherwise slow but sure-footed car that is very cheap to operate and very sporty looking. anyone else have good luck like this?
i will always have a comeback! :o)

I have had really good fortune with my 95 Mystique. It is almost loaded and it runns and looks almost like new. There are some things here and there that give trouble from time to time but nothing major. I just changed the battery this morning, seems I have the optional sie one...other then that I replaced the radio, speakers and added some bass tubes. It handles just like my dad's 95 SE but it a bit more nimble because it has the Zetec, I just love it, and it is quick also

Not quite a year ago now, with some misgivings, but in a rather desperate situation, I bought a 1996 Mystique with 109,320 miles on it. On the way home tonight, the odometer will pass 136,000 miles. At this point, I am very pleased with this car. It runs quite well, and has been amazingly trouble-free. Perhaps this is normal for cars this modern, but based on my past experience with other cars, it seems remarkable that this one, with so many miles on it, does not yet burn or leak oil at all.
I did have to get the timing belt replaced on it, but I bought it knowing that it needed this. I have also had to make a few minor repairs of various sorts, and I need yet to replace the EGR valve, which seems to be sticking open at times.

Spammers will be dealt with very harshly!} ------- Moonlight Blue 1996 Mercury Mystique GS , Zetec engine, ATX. No mods. (Well, OK, one mod. Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios. I liked the Tempo's radio better. That counts as a mod, doesn't it? I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare. I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars. Does this count as a mod? If so, I guess I have two mods. Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)

It is so great to read about problem free cars that you all are happy with! I love my 95 SE ATX and guess the Mystique is a great car, from all I've heard.

Also happy with my 98 Mystique, but had (I Hope) most of my issues up front. Only have 18,000 miles as the car sat on the lot from MAR 97 to AUG 2000 when I bought it - so I am the reverse of some of you.
Runs well after major auto trans work and as all of you know catching up on all the recalls. Have the 2.0 ZETEC.
I too like the stuff that came on the Mystique as standard - what you all have mentioned. Just hoping that the trans holds up. Everyone is not as hopeful on other posts.
Great in town car for D.C. and performs as advertised. What I guess I like best is the car runs right down the middle of road - doesn't wander or drift. Have the little tires and one day may go to the larger 195/65's.

I too have been thrilled with my '96 Mystique and have had only a few issues with it. It is nice to read that these cars will last if you take care of them. I was getting a bit worried after reading where the trans will go out and you will start experiencing over heating problems along with no rear break and other endless headaches. My stalling issue was because the dealership didn't replace the wiring harness when I took it in for the recall. The water pump went at 55,000 miles but other then that, it runs like new.
I love my little Mystique! Just wish it was a bit quieter on the inside... tired of the road noise.
