A cold air line would just be a hose stuck through the same hole I take it and further reducing the area of the hole?
the heat shield allows the use of open air filter w/o bad effects of hot air going through the intake.
hose stuck through hole would be fed down to behind bumper bringing in cooler air as opposed to where air is normally brought from behind the headlight assembly which is still close to the engine which is still sorta warm.
