i iwill start of by saying i own a 98' contour svt and that i am new to the board and thanks in advance. here is my problem. i know this is going to be bad, seeing as how i don't see any ticking being good. but can you guys give me an idea of what to expect as far as what could be wrong and what is going to run to get it fixed. i am a new user so any names and contacts would be great. by the way the oil was changed last week, the noise started yesterday, and the oil is still perfectly gold and up the fill line. you can email me at never2fastF4i@aol.com.

A tick under the valve cover could be a collapsed lifter.
Before you do anything else though, I suggest you pull the plugs and look at the threads. A loose plug can make a similar sound and may have deposits on the thread. Always use anti-seize when putting them back in.

If it seems like it is a collapsed lifter, make sure your oil pressure is OK.

Good luck! and welcome to CEG!

i know i started this post but after listening to the thing all day now i am starting to think its not coming from the engine itself but behind it, i am also noticing a slight vibration. any ideas? possibly catalytic or mount or something. here is what i notice, acceleration from a dead stop i hear it and it get loader and faster with more rpm's, but if i am cruising in 5 i don't hear it all and it quiets to almost nothing when sitting and idling.

My ticking too didn't make the noise in 5th gear, but did in every other gear. When I first heard it i thought it was the speedo or something, but more than likely you will be needing a new engine.

Just about every Duratec that I have been around seems to have a slight ticking sound at idle with the hood up. Injectors or something like that...

If the ticking isn't completely tied to the engine RPM, you could have pre-cats that are starting to crumble. They usually sound more like BBs in a can but could sound something like a tick. Try putting a large screwdriver blade on the precat(s) and 'listen' to the handle to see if the noise is coming from the precats. Open the hood and rev the engine slightly by hand to see if the sound follows the engine speed closely.

I have a little ticking as well, but it is not RPM depedant meaning that when I touch the accelerater it does not get louder, in fact it dissapears.
