Took mine off a long time ago also. I think it's on there for sound insulation. Someone once said it could be like a fire thing, falling on the engine if it catches fire. Whatever it's for, i took mine off and will leave it off.

It is there so if you engine catches on fire the plastic tabs melt and it falls on the engine. My thoughts, if the engine catches on fire your SOL anyways, and it's added weight and less air for the engine...

I saw a tour at the junk yard, looked like a pre98, it had caught fire and then, must have been pushed into a river, cause it was all warped from the fire, all the interior was black like suit, and the outside had moss, and water marks on it, the rims were in good condition though lol, they had just brought it in, the only thing left that had color was the very tip of it, it was teal. Wish I had my digi cam with so I could have took some pictures.
