Wondering if anyone has expreienced this or has any thoughts as to what might be causing it...96 Contour SE-V6 Last fall I encountered a problem where my tranny seemed to "disconnect" from the engine, and the engine would rev as if it were in neutral and I was pressing the gas. It would usually happen for only a few seconds and seem to "grab" again. If I wasn't able to get my foot off the gas fast enough before it grabbed it would slam back into gear. I noticed it happens at highway speeds 90% of the time and it only seems to happen when I was accelerating moderatley (or more), the temperature is over 75 and the car is warm, never cold. Also it's one of those problems that's cosistent enough to be aggravaing and make me worry, but not consistent enough that my mechanic can experience it. I took it to the garage and they couldn't find anything wrong with the tranny or the engine. They added some synthetic tranny medic to the tranny. It shifts smoother now, but my problem isn't gone. Any ideas out there... Thanks.

Your CD4E tranny POS that mazda built is nutralizing in overdrive. Your in for some MAJOR problems. when this happens there is only a couple of things that can cause it. The overdrive clutches are scorched and or the clutches are burnt . Or your overdrive solinoid is going bad. If you have a substancial decrease in mpg then the problem most likely originated in yout torque converter. Either way you have an internal problem. the best advice i can give you it to have the tranney scanned for codes most places will do this for free. BUT be carefull, these transmission shops are all crooks. I hope for your sake im wrong but i dont think so im pretty familuar with transmissions. Good luch dude.

The CD4E trans is built in Batavia, Ohio, no mazda here!!!!

Mercedes are built in North Caroilna. No German cars there HUH. Dont try to correct someone unless you actually have a clue as to what you are talking about. TERRY...........A CD4E is a Mazda tranny!

Just so you know, Terry was an engineer in the early days of the Contour program, so if it was a Mazda tranny, he would know. So maybe you should make sure YOU have a clue my friend. Trying to play expert with Terry is not the greatest of ideas.

Oh, you rebuild them so you must know everything about their manufacture. The CD4E is also put to work in the front-drive Mercury Cougar, built alongside the 626 at Flat Rock after Probe/MX-6 production ends, and, reworked for 4wd use where needed, in the Mazda Tribute/Ford Escape SUV twins. The CD4E is manufactured in Batavia, Ohio under the auspices of ZF Batavia, a joint venture of Ford and ZF Friedrichshafen AG. Hmmm, ZF Friederflaven (or whatever) sure sounds like Mazda to me. i dont know if this is the same thing but on the old taurusaurus i had i would get the same feeling with the front right wheel....it would feel as if it was disengaging from the transmission whenever i would turn the wheel to the left...it would loss power to that side and regain when wheel was straightened out....turning to the right did not have the same problem...i dont know if something cheaper coulda been replaced but the tranny was leaking like idunnowhat and getting worse so i just replaced it

I've been to the plant in Batavia and seen these being made.It is not a Mazda and you sir are talking out of your rear end.....
