IIRC, the body cannot digest more than 30g of protein in 1 digestive cycle, which can complicate things a bit.
In both HS and college I know/knew plenty of vegitarians (or even vegans) whom have TERRIBLE diatary habbits. On the other hand, one of my roomates is in far better shape than I, even though he eats more meat.
One meat vegetarians seem to have a hard time arguing about is fish. Presuming you get a fish that's low in mercury (and other pollutants) they are often very good for you, despite how much I hate sea food.
My stepfather is very health concious. Exercises regularly eats a very well rounded diet, grows his own herbs and vegitbles, but still eats meat most nights of the week.
Lastly, there are few things in life tastier to me than a nice rare filet mignon
