Wrong USDA the food pyramid is from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Yes, but it is sponsored by the Diary industry. They are the ones that came up with it, not the gov't.

http://www.sfu.ca/~jfremont/cfg1.htmlCanada food guide. (US is similiar) The important point, I think, is too eat the appropriate portions from each food group to get the right amount of calories, vitamin, nutrients, proteins, etc. Now, if one is a pure vegan, it becomes a little more complicated to attain this balance, but most vegetarians I know are very salient in the ways of proper nutrition (eg. combining legumes to get all needed proteins). There are other issues at work here though. - Feeding capacity on a global scale (eg. the food/energy required to produce X number beef cattle could feed many more people than the X number beef cattle) - Toxicity accumulation increases as you go up in the food chain. I'm not a vegan, but I wouldn't hold anything against one. A balanced diet from all 4 food groups is my goal, and I really enjoy the food part of life. Taking away meat (and maybe even dairy) is something I don't think I'd do. I don't eat for merely living, I enjoy it too! Let's not forget regular excercise, which I think is just as important...

Oh and veggie farmers don't contribute either!
I'm an omnnivore and couldn't possibly imagine not eating red meat. I love it and honestly believe I would be as sick as a dog if I stopped eating it.
The fact that you have to eat about 20lbs of spinach to equal 1lb of red meat's protein isn't too appetizing to me.
I love salad and veggies of all sorts as well, and could not live without those either, but not eating meat ot meat related products is insane, IMHO. Who wants to pop a bazillion pills and eat all sorts of laboratory produced powders and suplements in order to make up for a what a good steak offers?
I agree that we have a longer than desirable digestive tract which is why you shouldn't overcook your meat. Anything more than "medium" is asking for trouble. The meat when overcooked, makes it so hard for you body to digest, that it actualy rots in your digestive tract - not good! Might as well eat a firkkin shoe, cos it'll digest about the same...
Me, I like my steaks rare , and I only eat them like that in reputable establishments or when I cook it. So I know I am not getting some rotted steak. I've never gotten sick from eating meat like this.
Vegetarians make me laugh, but vegans are just plain nuts.
But that's my opinion, so don't take it the wrong way.
There's no one more opinionated than a vegetarian or vegan - funny that!

I've heard all kinds of reasons to not eat meat, from health reasons to how they treat the animals, all kinds of disgusting stuff as well. But i still love meat and eat it all the time. why? because I like it, it tastes good to me, simple as that. I have yet to eat any vegitarian dish that i liked the taste of, i think that's what a lot of this boils down to, what we each like. just like we say with our cars, it's not my style, but if you like it, then cool.

To add some levity... read that line very carefully... "Diary industry." Not only are they making young girls live fantasy lives in pads of paper that have a small padlock, but, now they're telling us that we should eat nothing but meat and dairy!?!? :-)

i dont know why people make such a big deal about being a vegeterian. its just what you eat - who cares? i mean, would you make fun of someone cause they ordered pork instead of chicken?
lance, why do you say dairy is bad for you? i try to drink as much milk as possible, and i'd like to know where you get your information, so i can make a decision for myself.
now officially a troll, i guess. used to have a black 96 SE, until it broke down one too many times.
now I'm hunting for a motorycle.

I'll be as forgiving of that statement as you would be if I went into the Suspension forum and said cutting springs was just as good as Eibachs.
Two facts: - Spinach is 49% protein, so 20 lbs of spinach would be just under 10 lbs or protein! - Plant protein is WAY easier to assimilate than animal protein, especially when animal protein is cooked.

Why would you need pills and powders to get what a steak offers? More misinformation.

Hmmm. Never knew about that. Guess I'll have to rethink my med.well-well done preference. Although I hate having any red juice coming out of my steaks. Gotta be barely pink for me. Cant say I have ever gotten sick from anything I've eaten either. Guess I've got an iron gut I'm sure that will all change as I get older. I do believe that you need everything in moderation and I like my vegetables as well.
