Actually, it is much more likely that you'll make it sound worse than better, depending on what your definition of good sound is.
The question I always ask people is: "When you go to a concert, where is the stage?" 
For most people, the stage will be in front of them, with all the sound emanating from it. So why would you want anything different in the car?
It may not be what you're used to, but once you've heard it done right you'll never want it any other way. 
And then there was the new thought, with the new technology called 6.1 surround sound. Where you hear things from left and right back and forward (we only have left to right i believe on most stereos) That made it seem like you were in the middle of it, not watching it. If you want to seem like you are watching something on stage, or shall I say listening to something on stage, Install all your speakers up front and non in the back window. Otherwise go for the surround sound effect, Sound very good. I have heard it in other cars. AWSOME. but then again it depends on the type of music you are listening too.
