ahh you put it in terms that i could understand with that parents liquor cabinet analogy  well then noone really answered my original question: hose in the bucket - ways i could f' up? air in system? mobil1 also good for my atx? (wish it wasnt atx - but it is) Thomas 95 LX v6

I am by no means a mechanic geneaous, but the way it was explained to me is that air in the system works it's way out without causing damage. As long as you don't let the tranny run dry, all should be fine. However, you now have my interest peaked ... time to go ask some questions

hit me back if you find out anything. your method of two buckets and two houses sounds very reasonable. that's what ill do this weekend, as well as replace my lo beams with sylvania silverstars 9005's. i still need to figure out how to get the right bulb out (something blocking the counterclockwise turn & release)
other than that ill tell you how it went next week. god it sucks waiting for the weekend to have access to a garage...

Don't worry about air in the system. There is a vent hose located on top of the valve body pan that will vent out any air that makes its way into your system.
Although I would not exactly hold one of the lines up high while makeing the change. LOL! As long as you keep the input line just off the bottom of the bucket containing the new fluid, you will be fine.

You get air in the system when you over or under fill the tranny. Either one will cause the oil to foam and cause hard shifting. Under filled, the system could suck air on hard turns. You will know it because the car will neutralize for a second or two. Over, the gear sets will stir it up. It works it way out. There is anti-foaming agents in the fluid but they only do so much. The tranny is vented, otherwise it would blow out the seals when it heats up. I've seen folks overfill the tranny and find red puddles under their cars later.

This is WRONG.
The Return line does not DRAW fluid back into the tranny.
You have to POUR the fluid into the dipstick tube.
The return line only connects to an internal tube
that directs the oil return flow, to splash on the internal drive chain.

Although I prefer to add fluid through the dipstick hole, the two bucket method works too. I think you waste a little fluid because you can never suck it all out of the bottom of the supply bucket.

No, the Return line will not suck in the oil.
The Return line doesn't connect to the INLET of the pump.
So there is nothing inside the CD4E to suck in the oil on the return line.
The oil has to be poured into the dipstick tube.
