try www.car-parts.com. you can usually find a low mileage in your area for a resonable price (cheaper than a rebuild anyway).

Your FORD Dealer will have a Remanufactured CD4E transmission for about $1700.
It comes with a 2yr/24,000 mile warranty.
R&R costs vary depending on the hourly rate of your Dealership.

Does that bending over include KY jelly or not?

Trust me ... eBay will save you quite a bit of money if you willing to do the work yourself. If not, prepare to take it in the rear

A little bit of good news reguarding the warranty. I recently had my MTX-75 replaced at my Ford dealer and as of 0ct '02 the warranty is now 3 years/36000 miles. The reason I went ford was that they were the only place that I could find that'd warranty the tranny for more than 6 months as well as being the only place that'd warranty both labor and tranny of the same period of time. Call me crazy but I wasn't willing to go the cheap route, have my tranny go out 6 months down the road and be SOL. FYI, mine cost $2755 all said, but in my experience manual tranny's are generally a fair amount less expensive than autos. I may be mistaken in this case though.

Well I dont have about $3000.00 dollers to spend on one. I dont make alot of money and I wont use a credit card. I did come across "RoadMaster Transmission Service" They sell remanufactured trannys for about $900.00 with warranty, plus you can get a extended warranty on top of that. Has anyone done business with them? Or heard anything on them? Thanks everyone!

Todd, the only thing that I might add to all this (I have been on the market for a used CD4E for about a month now) and make sure that whoever you get the tranny from has had it dynoed. What this means is that the tranny was put on machine to test it before shipping it out to you.

From the junkyards I have talked to in my area, they will work with you if the tranny you get does not work after install and it is proven to be an internal problem and not an install problem. But from what I have found, it is really hard to find a used 2000+ tranny that the car did not have serious frontale damage or the tranny was already out of the car (in that case, you have no idea what was wrong with the car in the first place.)

I found several really nice possiblities for around $700-$850! But I am taking my time since my tranny is not all that messed up. I have managed to fix the two leaks I had and other then a small surge when shifting into 4th gear, it is fine. In the meantime, I have put a bottle of TransX in it, just to hopfully help it out some. If you can get a reman for $900, I would seriously ask some questions. Take it from me, I have tried the cheapest route before and am still paying the price.

If forking out $3000 for a installed reman is beyond your reach, then bone yard is your best bet. Just with a year 2000 or better. Even if you go to somewhere like Cottmans Transmissions, you are still going to pay around $1600 just for the reman. Labor will most likely run around $400. We are talking about half of what the car is worth. I mean I love my car just as much as the next, but... well do the math again if you don't get it yet.

Just my two cents. Hope it helps you out some.

Can't it just be rebuilt? I had the tranny in my 87 LeSabre rebuilt for $1500 including the R&R. It's a comparable tranny, 4 speed automatic, with a lock up torque converter but perhaps not as much electronic control. However, it's probably just as hard to remove and replace, and the time to replace the mechanicals that are out of spec are probably similar.

I would look for a family owned, non-chain, transmission shop that has been in business for a good long time, and appears to have an orderly and organized shop. (Don't expect it to be a hospital O/R, but it should be reasonably neat.)

As far as the value of the car vs the cost of the tranny. If you know the car has been taken care of, then the cheapest car to drive is the one you own.

I paid a cool grand for the Buick and didn't flinch at $1500 for a tranny rebuild. I've driven the car about 36K since the rebuild without drama.

Good luck,

TB
