A new clutch has its pressure feel at the bottom of he travel and gets higher as it wears,having said that it sounds like he should bleed it at least...as to the shifter positions that sounds like he hasn't got the cables on correctly at the trans or one/two are out of wack on the bottom of the shifter or not routed correctly via the subframe...
