SVTim: I had my clutch replaced last year, and I couldn't believe the difference in clutch pedal feel to the old one. I find the pedal a lot easier to depress than the old one too.
As far as your shifter problem, sounds like your shifter centering spring is disconnected from the shifter. it can be seen by pulling up on the shifter boot.
