I'm not sure, but I suspect that the change happened at the same time as the change from return fuel system to returnless fuel system.
Check the build date and post it. Maybe someone knows the changeover date (a dealer parts person should be able to look it up). The build date is on the VIN sticker on the driver's door.

The change happened "by" the 2001 model year. The estimated date is at the end of the 2000 MY (some late 2000 3L engines are small pitch but also OVAL cams - COMPLETLY different story) but "to date" no Contour/Mystique has ever been found to have small pitch timing components. Definitely not any SVT.
The timing pitch change had nothing to due with the change to the returnless fuel system; date or parts-wise.
