The problem is usually rubbing on the outer fenders in the back. The wider the wheel goes, the more offset you want to "keep it tucked" ...

3" drop, 7.5" wheels, 225 tires, no rub. That was my setup.

The stock E1 wheel is stamped with 49.5mm, if I get over to where my race tires are stored today I'll take a picture for you.

And yes you still would have a problem with your 18x7.5's. Think about it, if the stock 6.5" wheel has a 49.5mm, a 7" wheel should be right around 43mm offset to keep the inner dimensions about the same, so a 7.5" wheel whould need something about 37mm or so.

So let me get this straight:

You say the E1 6.5" (165.1mm) wide wheel has a 49.5mm offset. That would put 132.05mm inside the hub and 33.05mm outside the hub.

And My 7.5" (190.5mm) Alba Blaze rims have a 42mm offset which would put 137.25mm inside the hub and 53.25 outside the hub.

Therefore I could make do with a 5mm spacer. (137.25mm - 132.05 mm = 5.2mm) Is that correct?

Take a look at my photos in the, "Help: My Tires Self-Destructed" thread. It looks like a heck of a lot more than 5mm has been ground off the edge of my tire. I know diameter hasn't come into play because the stock 215/50x16 KDW's were 24.3" in diameter and the 225/35x18 S-03's also measure 24.3".

I'm so freakin' confused...

I think I'll get this one right ;D

Don't forget to consider the width of your tires. Remember you are talking about a 20mm difference in tire width, of which I'd expect about 10mm on each side

The 215mm tire is going to extend beyond the stock 6.5" wide wheel about 25mm or just under an inch.

The 235mm wide tire is going to extend beyond the 7.5" wide wheel about 22.25mm.

On the inside, the factory distance from the hub face to the inside edge of the tire, if we go with a 49.5mm offset is: 132.05mm + 25mm or about 157mm or close to 6.2"

So, do you need to get to this value or smaller to guarantee that you don't hit any suspension components?

Of course what about the fenders?

But I think you are looking for an effective offset of 39mm or under to clear the inner components, but check my math since it was suspect before and watch for clearing the fenders.

I didn't check your math, but this seems like it is in the ballpark. I'd probably guess 37mm would be an average offset of a 7.5" aftermarket wheel. One thing to concider though is not all 225's are created equal, some are bigger then others depending on brand.

no i think your getting everything mixed up. the lower the offset # the more it'll stick out. so these r the minimum offset numbers i've found from everyone on ceg. 7inch wide=40 offset 7.5 wide=42 offset 8inch wide=45 offset. the stock wheels are 6.5 inch wide w/ a 49 offset. IF they were 37 offset they would be pushed out more looking better. remember these numbers r to get the wheel out to the fender edge to look tight. IF ford wanted the same thing, they would've gone w/ a 37 offset which agrees with the sequencing i listed.

I disagree with your logic. I'm going to do this by talking backspacing, it will make it much easier. Backspacing, if you don't know, is measured from the inner most part of the wheel to the portion of the wheel which makes contact with the hub. If you are confussed you can go here for offset information or here for backspace information.

Ok now for the math. The E1 SVT 16x6.5 wheel has a 49.5mm offset so this translates into 1.95" of offset so 5.2" of backspacing, therefore 1.3" is on the outside of the hub. Now, if you've ever noticed, if you try and put a 225/50/16 tire on the rear, it has VERY little clearance between the strut and the tire. Also, with my race tires, under hard cornering it rubs the radius arm.

Ok, so a 17x7" wheel with an offset of 42mm gives you a 5.15" backspace.

42mm / 25.4mm/inch = 1.65"
7" / 2 = 3.5"
3.5" + 1.65" = 5.15" (backspace)

Therefore 1.65" is on the outside of the hub, this is what gives the wide stance look. It also gives you a little more clearance on the inside then stock to get those 225's on there.

Lets do one more wheel that we know fits before we go on and prove that your 8" wheel probably won't fit without issues. So we all know that the SVT Focus wheels will fit. They are pretty extreme 17x7 with 49mm offset.

49mm / 25.4mm/inch = 1.93"
7" / 2 = 3.5"
3.5" + 1.93" = 5.43" (backspace)

Now I'd hazard to guess that these just barely squeeze on our cars and that 225's depending on profile and actual width probably wouldn't fit with these wheels.

So what you're saying is that an 8" wheel should have a 45mm offset? Lets do the math to see if it will fit.

45mm / 25.4mm/inch = 1.77"
8" / 2 = 4"
4" + 1.77" = 5.77" (backspace)

Hmmm, something seems a little off. That is over .5" further in then the stock wheels and .35" further in then the SVTF's 17"s! I'm almost positive that won't fit on the rear of the car.

Now I believe 37mm came up in an earlier post as possibly the correct offset for an 8" wheel, lets run those numbers.

37mm / 25.4mm/inch = 1.45"
8" / 2 = 4"
4" + 1.45" = 5.45" (backspace)

Now it is kinda strange that the backspace with this combination is incredibly close to the SVTF's backsapce. I believe 5.5" is probably the largest backspace that the Contour can handle. Now the problem is figuring out how much wheel can you put on the outside before rubbing the fenders (though I believe most people with 8" wheels roll the fenders).

Feel free to check the numbers and ask around for the offset that people are using with 8" wheels, but I think you'll find it is not 45mm!

My best advise is to talk to someone who has put 8" or 7.5" wheels on their car and ask them what their offset is...then do some research yourself!

this is exactly what i did in the past. yeah i get all your math. all my numbers and suggestions are based on the findings and fittings of our members.

i'm talking about our cars, not all cars.

so then dont listen to me or qbert. do searches on offsets, rubbing, 18s and 19s and see who u agree with based on what other members HAVE done. pay attention to who comments that they rub like a biatch and who has little rubbing. see who has done their suspension and who hasn't. if the offsets are mentioned, pm those members and ask them. i think most will have similar offsets, no matter what qberts math says.

Yeah, I was also talking about Contours. Trust me, 90% sure that you won't be able to get an 8 inch wheel with at 45mm offset on the car, well not with a tire anyway.
