One problem that I recently learned is that if you are having serious enough problems with your tranny that would require a rebuild, in most cases you are actually better getting a reman unit installed by a tranny shop.

Reason being, if you have an older pre98 ATX that has never had service (I am not talking about fluid changes), to get the most out of the ATX it should be updated with current aftermarket and/or OEM internals (mainily in the valve body area and pump) and this is where everything gets expensive and things add up. With a pre98, you would be looking at roughly $1850 for an updated and rebuilt unit currently in your car. You can get a reman for $1600 with a 12/12k warrenty that has been dyno tested prior to delivery.

I have talked to several local Contour and Mystique owners and have come up with a general guideline on "the right way to fix a CD4E cost effectively". If it is a pre98, get a reman and be done with it. If it is post98, then it is worth a rebuild once... You would be looking at roughly $750-$1000 for repairs.

Then again, there is always the local NAPA with a can of TransX.

Just my thoughts and 2 cents on this topic.

Oh yeah! Mobil 1 is great stuff and most will tell you to get a tranny cooler. These two things are worth there weight gold.
