I was born and raised pretty much in Florida. Depending on what kind of work you do for a living rides heavily on where you live in Florida.
My family live within the Marion/Citrus county areas. That's the pretty much center of Florida. Ocala....where my mom just moved BACK to, is a pretty big city. Not as big as Tampa or Miami, but big. Jobs are good there. My sisters all live in Citrus county where jobs are a little scare depending on what you do. Thing is, Ocala is only 30 miles away, so, like my mom when she lived in Citrus(and many other do as well) they commute to Ocala for work.
The Citrus county is a beautiful area. Very quiet, not much crime at all. Mostly retirees living there. There are a ton of families though..... mind you. It's right on the gulf, but rent isn't high at all. My mom & I shared a two bed. townhouse..... real nice one, for $325 a month. Lots of moble homes there, land is cheap. As for jobs, I believe there is a computer company out there, but the biggest job there is roofing. A LOT of roofing companies. My mom was a paralegal, so she could get a job with most any lawyer, but in Ocala pay is higher.
The Marion/Citrus county areas are perfect because you have Tampa and St. Pete only 75 miles south, Gainsville is about an hours drive north. Tallahassee is 3 hours north. Orlando, Daytona, and the Atlantic are a 2 hour drive east. Ft. Lauderdale and Miami are, depending on which way you go, could be 4 to 6 hours southeast.
One major thing, unless you've had Florida tags before on your car, be prepared to pay a HUGE Impact Fee when registering your vehicles. If they still do that to out of staters.
Oh, and about the asthma thing, my mom left northern California because it was too severe on her asthma and allergies. She says it's MUCH better in Florida.
