Hey there.

I am considering moving my family to Florida. We are tired of the winters here in N.E. and the waiting for warm weather to come. Our young kids both have asthma and could benefit from a warmer climate.

Have any of you moved to Florida from another state. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tristen

I moved from New York about 7 years ago...The summer is hot, but every place you go has A/C. I wouldn't move back.

I moved from PA to Singapore (very tropical) and then to Miami...and THEN to Philly (soon to be back in Miami)

When it rains..it RAINS...but it's not the same as up here..when it rains up here everything feels like sh!t and it gets cold... do the move! you won't regret it!

Yeah.. the summer rains here are almost like clockwork... But nothing like northern rains... It rains huge drops, heavy and thick.. but warm.. Jenna and I enjoy walking in the rain, nearly every day..

If you're looking for a place to live.. you just found it.. come on down!!

I was born and raised pretty much in Florida. Depending on what kind of work you do for a living rides heavily on where you live in Florida.
My family live within the Marion/Citrus county areas. That's the pretty much center of Florida. Ocala....where my mom just moved BACK to, is a pretty big city. Not as big as Tampa or Miami, but big. Jobs are good there. My sisters all live in Citrus county where jobs are a little scare depending on what you do. Thing is, Ocala is only 30 miles away, so, like my mom when she lived in Citrus(and many other do as well) they commute to Ocala for work.
The Citrus county is a beautiful area. Very quiet, not much crime at all. Mostly retirees living there. There are a ton of families though..... mind you. It's right on the gulf, but rent isn't high at all. My mom & I shared a two bed. townhouse..... real nice one, for $325 a month. Lots of moble homes there, land is cheap. As for jobs, I believe there is a computer company out there, but the biggest job there is roofing. A LOT of roofing companies. My mom was a paralegal, so she could get a job with most any lawyer, but in Ocala pay is higher.
The Marion/Citrus county areas are perfect because you have Tampa and St. Pete only 75 miles south, Gainsville is about an hours drive north. Tallahassee is 3 hours north. Orlando, Daytona, and the Atlantic are a 2 hour drive east. Ft. Lauderdale and Miami are, depending on which way you go, could be 4 to 6 hours southeast.
One major thing, unless you've had Florida tags before on your car, be prepared to pay a HUGE Impact Fee when registering your vehicles. If they still do that to out of staters.
Oh, and about the asthma thing, my mom left northern California because it was too severe on her asthma and allergies. She says it's MUCH better in Florida.

I grew up in South Florida (West Palm Beach) and went to college in Toledo, Ohio. I lived there for 5 years. The winters just sucked!!! When I graduated, I moved back the next day. I've never regretted it.

South Florida is HUGE!!! This includes West Palm, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. There are 3 major airports down here and tons of stuff to do. This area has all major sports covered (I live right next to where the Florida Panthers play) and you can play golf all year round.

The computer industry is very prevalent down here...but jobs are scarce just like everywhere else.

Good Luck,

i moved down here to tampa, florida 6 years ago. all i can really say is damn. the nights are the best in the world. the beaches, well the beaches in florida speak for themselves. every major sport. you really cant get any better than florida unless you lived in the land of make believe. ive been to miami, jacksonville, ft lauderdale, tallahassee, ocala, gainsville, daytona, etc, every city is nice they all have there perks. im not trying to be bias to other cities but to me tampa is the place to be. yeah miami is the shizzit but crime, crowds to high for me. it takes me 4 hours to get to downtown miami from tampa. i like being centrally located but thats me. anywhere you choose to live in florida wont be a bad choice really, and i guarntee you wont go back. i go home to boston once a year maybe every other year, to go skiing but once im done, thats it im done back down to tampa.

by the way tampa has a fairley good amount of svt's and other people from the forums here.
