So for Christmas, I recieved the Pioneer 220 watt speakers that are epecially made for Contours. Well, they sounded nice, but I knew they could do better. So yesterday (I was in an extremely bad mood, since I knew I couldn't afford it), I bought a Pioneer DEH-P4400 that is 50x4 watts. I finally got it installed and it sounds like Sh--. My factory head unit sounded better, I don't understand why this one sounds bad. I was thinking that maybe I need to byass the factory amp, but the guy at HHGreg said that I shouldn't need to because he installed a custom stereo in a Mustang without bypassing the amp, and he said it sounded great. Soo..... did I waste $200. on this stereo.... should I return it and just use the factory one?? Advice please... thanks....

Uh, that guy sells stereos for a living? When you amplify an amplified signal, it will be very distorted. by-pass that amp and it will solve all of your problems.

I got the same headunit. I never bypassed the factory amp and it sounds fine to me. Somebody told me at best buy and circuit city that if i don't bypass it, I can burn out one of the amps (factory and internal amp in headunit). I don't believe that. They're just trying to make money that's what I believe. I bypassed it and it's not as loud so i took it back. If you hook up an after market amp, you're still running both amps. What the hell is the difference? That's why I kept it like it is.

you just can't compare ANY aftermarket amp with the piece of sh!t factory amp in the Contour. Have you ever seen an aftermarket amp as small and light as the one in our cars? Come on, it's junk...
Why would you want to amplify an ALREADY amplified signal from your head unit? You're simply adding distortion... PERIOD. If you want to use an amplifier, you must run PREAMP outputs from your headunit, or get an amp that has speaker level inputs... and the factory amp DOES NOT HAVE speaker level inputs. You WILL burn it out!

I just want to clarify that if you use an aftermarket amp with a aftermarket HU you are not using both amps (your HU amp and your aftermarket) you are only using the aftermarket!

If you need an amp bypass harness send a self addressed/ stamped envelope and you can have mine. I have a 4ch amp powering my speakers so i dont need it anymore. pm if you want it. And yes it will fix your problem.
