My CEL came on but the car began running poorly at the same time. I put on the new plug wires I had purchased but hadn't yet installed, and disconnected the battery. Car ran right and the CEL was out.
I had performed a search on the forum here and the bad plug wires seemed the most common cause. Mine lasted 44,000 miles.
