I have a 96 SE with a 2.5 V6 and a very new rebuilt ATM. When leaving the transmission shop, the engine cashed in its chips. It needs a complete head job at minimum but the 141k engine is probably not worth the effort. Otherwise the car is in great shape. It is Black with grey leather interior.

How much are you asking for the car?

Hank,
I can imagine how you feel with having the tranny rebuilt and then the engine goes.....something doesn't sound right!
To rebuild that engine will probably cost you around 3 to 5 grand.
I don't know if you are willing to make that investment when you may be not quite sure the tranny is fine and working correctly since you haven't been able to drive it very far.

maybe...if you have someone else do it, even then that seems high. would be nowhere near that if you did it yourself. heck, why not upgrade to the 3L at a perfect opportunity such as this?

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, however you probably wouldn't see 3K with a working engine.
I just punched in your numbers at Edmunds.com and as a rough 96 SE with 141K:
Average Trade: $899 Average Private Party: $1438 Average Retail: $2197
And given the glut of used cars after 0% financing, I'd say those are optomistic numbers.
You are about 210 miles from my house and if you decide you can't get the $3K you want, send me some e-mail with pics and we can talk about me buying the car for about $1K.
I am serious. I'm on call this week, so I couldn't get it until the weekend of Feb 9th.
E-mail both of my addresses with a phone and pics if you would like to unload it.

Yikes! Thanks for letting me know that my car is practically worthless in the used car market. It sounds like if anything more than a new set of tires of alternator is required, the car is totalled. Seems ridiculous for a 6 year old car that originally cost $15k to $19k. I have no intention of selling mine anyway, but still - those are horrible values. This must be one of the highest depreciating cars on the planet. On the bright side, my car still runs and drives like a champ.
'96 Contour SE, black / opal grey, MTX, every option, KKM intake, resonator removed, Flowmaster Series 40 DeltaFlow, GoodYear Eagle HP's, 115k miles, new paint 7/01. Driven cross-country 4 times.
'70 Corvette Stingray Coupe, Cortez Silver, 454 bored to 462, Muncie M21, too many mods to list, lots of fun. 335 rwhp / 365 rwtq
'02 Corvette Z06, Electron Blue / Black, every option. Stock for now...

On the bright side, my car still runs and drives like a champ. Remember, That is rough condition, clean and operation might get you another $1k to $1500, but that's about it. Again, these are only guides, Edmunds still doesn't actually write checks and buy the cars TB
