I am looking for New Tires for my 96 SE. The originals worked great but were death traps for 6 months of the year which Minnesotan's call winter. I tried some all seasons and they are way to loud. Any suggestions for a good alternative? Maybe a good touring tire.

I've got Goodyear Eagle HPs (P205-60HR-15) on my 96 SE. They handle well dry and wet and have about 30K on them and still look they have plenty of life. Sears usually has them for about $75 a pop, minus M&B. Saw them as low as $62 mail order. Some of the tires recommended by owners here are defintely not made for snow, so you need to consider this factor since your originals were unsatisfactory.

I just replaced my old BFGoodriches with Michelin Pilot XGT H4. Very happy with them, noticably quieter, and road grip is excellent. Here's a link to the Tire Rack website: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/michelin/mi_pilotxgth4.jsp They're a little expensive, but I'm impressed with them.
Midnight Red '95 Contour SE ATX Just completed the lighted moonroof switch mod. Its great! www.webcentrix.org/contour_se.html "The whole purpose of a car is not to go fast it's to get from point A to B, and if you can afford it, to get from point A to B with some sense of style." As seen on the Ricecop.com boards

Neddn,
Go get your tires at Sears and get the Road Hazard Warranty.
I bought a set of Micheling MXV4 Plus for $500 with the RH Warranty and recently got a puncture in the sidewall of one of them.
With the Warranty I got $180 back for the 4 tires. I had put 35,000 miles on them. They were good for 50,000 miles. I put it towards the purchase of 4 Michelin Pilot XGT H4. Final cost was $440 installed, M&B, and RH Warranty. The tires 205/60R15 cost $116/tire. They got $10 to M&B, and I think $4 per valve stem. The RH Warranty costs me $45 for all 4 tires, and you get FREE Rotation and Balance, and Flat Fix/Replacement, as long as you own the car.
The XGT are definitely stiffer than the MXV4 Plus, and the winter traction is very good. Dry road traction is much better than the MXV4 Plus. They will make your Tour ride quieter and it will feel as if it is sailing on smooth roads, but the bumps will be a little hard. On an SVT, they will be VERY HARD. We've only had about 4 inches of snow this winter, and with that, I had no trouble getting up hills.
If you are keeping your car for a considerable length of time, Sears is the way to go.
They can also special order any tire you want that they don't have. And they now sell Wheels.

Almost any Michelin tire can be ordered through Costco. I bought a set of Pilot XGT-h4's this way. The price is around the same as Tirerack, and comes with free liftime, balancing, rotation and road hazard. The only drawback is that if they have to special order the tires, and one needs to be replaced it can take a week to get a new one.

BFG HR2-4's Excellent tire in all weather. Great treadwear, excellent traction, quiet.
Can't say enough about BFG or Michelin (same company really)

I too bought a pair of Eagle HP's and love them. I got them at Sears at the beginning of the month for $58.99/tire. Here is a little tip I learned. Go on Sear's webpage and price out tires. Bring a printout of any online sale item that you are interested in with you to the store. Apparently the store operates independent of the webpage. These tires were not on sale at the store and would have cost me $82/tire. Hope this is helpful - Zack
