I've got Goodyear Eagle HPs (P205-60HR-15) on my 96 SE. They handle well dry and wet and have about 30K on them and still look they have plenty of life. Sears usually has them for about $75 a pop, minus M&B. Saw them as low as $62 mail order.
Some of the tires recommended by owners here are defintely not made for snow, so you need to consider this factor since your originals were unsatisfactory.
