If you run a 14.1@101 with a 2.7 60', that tells me your car makes good mid range and starts to fall off on the big end. My Z28 ran stock 14.08@99 with a 2.13 60'. Our MPH is close, yet my 60' is way better and our ET is almost identical. You made up ground somewhere, the mid range or you have a problem on the big end. Nonetheless, that is a good running car you have.

I think you guys are confused about changing to Ztec gears. It isn't going to make the car eaiser to launch it won't make it quicker, and it sure isn't going to be eaiser on parts. Even with the added power of the 3L or FI you will have to slip the clutch more for quick launch or the tires will spin just like with the stock gearing only faster and further. It will be harder on parts because the weight of the car is the same as before but now has less gear to help get it moving. If you want to keep from spining put better tires on and work on tuning the suspension. If I was going to make my car into a dedicated drag car I would be looking to use lower gears so it could be quicker off the line and use all of 4th gear instead of just shifting into 4th.

Leo has 4.5 IIRC. Originally posted by ATL-SVT: great idea, but who makes those gears?? I didn't know you could buy them anywhere?

I believe that Leo Capaldi had a line on a set of gears but they are quite expensive. The best solution for a street car going to the drag strip is to use a shorter tire. IIRC Turbo Tom was using the same slick I have been considering 15x8x22, which should lower final gearing enough to help with 60' times.

Going to a lower gear without a pure drag tire just spins the tire easier. If you have enough power to spin slicks, you would do the same and move to a taller gear or a taller tire. Turbo Tom is going to switch to a taller 26" slick to do tha same thing. The advantage of a taller tire over a taller gear is increased foot print, which is why Tom switched to a lower gear in the first place.
For a street tired car, the taller Zetec gear will help you hook up easier because you can grunt the engine into pulling the car instead of going up in smoke. It's a LOT easier to launch.

Brad you are right about a taller tire helping with traction but when you do this you also need a lower gear. Intalling a higher gear isn't going to have the same result as a taller tire and lower gearing. If you talk to anyone who is wise to the ways of drag racing you will find that going to a higher gear is not going to provide the solution you are looking for. If you also notice in my last post I said if I were building a dedicated drag car (which I am not) this is what I would do. That is why I suggest a shorter tire for most of our cars (low horsepower + heavy car = need more gear) if you want to run better 1/4 mile times.

I should have gotten the Zetec gear when I did the 3L and Quaife...

However it is going to slow down acceleration in every gear as a drawback! (less torque multiplication factor)
I found the change from 215/50 (yes quite worn out) to 225/50 changed the "effective" final drive more then I would have figured! Also the fact that BFG under rates the diameter of their 225/50 KDW tire quite a bit!
The added traction is great though, but I could not see dropping to a Zetec gear without some major power adding. (I.E. Forced Induction! Not just a 3L!)
