You're going to be looking at that amount if you replace it before it breaks anyway. So why not just have some fun and break some stuff before you shell out the same money for the aftermartet stuff?
In theory I agree with you AirKnight, but I did that exact same thing to my tranny (only with my street tires on). It really doesn't end up being a lot of fun when you have to have your 'Tour towed 162 miles back home. Granted if I would have planned to break something (which it seems I never do) it might have gone a little smoother. Oh, but boy oh boy was it fun to fork out $2755 for the tranny!

no, don't wanna spend $3K for a new tranny.
question (probably cross posting...)
are there any better trannys for the svt? I remember when I had my SHO, and dropped the tranny, I had a bulletproof one installed. It was amazing.
does anything like an upgraded tranny exist for the svt?

Because if you replace your current tranny with a new one then you can still sell your old one to cover teh cost of the 2nd one you bought. I bought a 2002 MTX-75 for $650 and sold my old post 2000 for $650 and avoided a lot of down time by having mine upgraded. When it was all said and done I paid $1350 for my HMS trans with a Quaife and zetec FD ratio.
I offer PnP Heads for all durtec's details at PnPheads.com or jesse@pnpheads.com for details.

Intresting, Is that a problem that has happend over and over. I keep thinking about that turboed focus that runs slicks and has no problems. Does he have a hardned set of gears?
No, I don't believe Tom has hardend gears, but he's also running shorter gears and short slicks which ease the situation. Once he gets his taller slicks on, he may have to be careful. Leo Capaldi has stripped more than one set of gears out after installing bullit proof trans and axles into his touring series Cougar. Fix one weak link, you find three others!!!

Yes, something does exist. It's the Bulldog Box from Terry Haines, or "HMS" (Haines Motor Sports). He's on fordcontour.org forums quite a bit, but he's not over here any more that I know of.

Werd! Can anyone tell me why you would want and/or need the Zetec Final Drive gear????? I'm gonna do a quife install when I put in my centerforce/fidanza combo with the ES tranny mounts. Does the shoshop kit have all the necessary parts to do the install??

lowers final drive to 3.84 or something, good for a car that's FI or 3L hybrid. . .makes more use of that power, you'll get better .25 mi times since you won't have that extra shift. . .

So it gives you more high end? Can you give a little more detail than that? I see what you are saying, but I'm a little fuzzy on what is sacrificed? If you gain on the high end, you'd have to suffer on initial accelerating power right? Bottom line is I guess since I don't have a 3L or FI than it's not something I need or want, correct?

With the 3L or FI... or both, the Zetec final drive makes the engine *grunt* harder down low before the tires spin. This aids in launching the car more steadily, plus makes better use of the power at hand. The SVT 2.5 would not have enough low end to need this extra gearing in most cases. Way to tell if you need it? If you think first gear is useless and only makes smoke before you shift to second (without dumping the clutch!), then you can probably make use of the taller gear.

I have the quaife, and have a best of 14.1 @ 98. The car was not running strong that day. On the street, the tires break lose at about 5500-6000 rpms. I dont think this hurts the performance too much since it is not just instant tire smoke, but the tires just chirp with a very subtle wheel hop. I think that is just the quaife transferring the power between the wheels. I would think an open diff would spin worse at the top of first gear. I have to shift to second not long after anyways, so I dont think it is hurting much.
One of these days I hope to have the car at the track on a good day. Given my 2.3 60' times, that should net a high 13.
