I used to have a Ford Probe a few years ago that did the same thing. It proved to be a bad CV joint, so I replaced the whole axle assembly, and it fixed the int. vibration. The reason for the intermittent nature, was because of differences in temperature, at various operating conditions while driving, which change clearances inside CV unit if it is worn to the point that the internal parts do not have preload anymore, and are sloppy.
