There are a number of buyout speakers at PE that look interesting for different projects.

For extremely cheap bass to add to an OEM system these 6x9s have an 8mm xmax and a .8 qts indicating that they would work pretty well in an IB installation. A pair of these on the rear deck would be hard to beat as far as cheap bass goes.

For someone thinking about doing and interesting speaker project like a line array or a very dynamic multimedia speaker, here is a stellar deal. 2" extended range driver for 90 cents a piece. A series of 32 of them in a 64" x 2.5" x 5.75" (internal dimensions) with 4 2" ports 2.5" long will give you greater than 100dB from 120 hz on up with only 4 watts. That would be a little under 70.00 with shipping and you could blow away most multimedia speakers. The response is pretty ragged in a few places but a couple of notch filters will cure the peaks. The dips are another story, but the response doesn't look any worse than something like a Bose product.

Another potential line array candidate is http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=269-568 which is a 4" wide range driver.

16 of them in a 2 cu ft sealed box should yield some impressive results.

In either case a subwoofer would be necessary at some point, but for the size of the drivers, the bass should be acceptable for temporary duty.

For a budget subwoofer for a moderate size ported box, this Pioneer 8" DVC sub looks good in a 1.5 cu ft box tuned to 42 hz (3" port 5.25" long)

Dave, your 2" line driver idea has peaked my interest in starting a new project. I already have the Vance D Titanic sub, but wonder if a 6-8" woofer could be easily be added to the bottom of the speaker to the to fill out the lower end a little (see awful diagram below.)

Also, is there any reason why I couldn't make a smaller center channel to match with 16 drivers?

You could definitely add the drivers to fill out the low end, and I would probably suggest it. But, you may have a problem with matching up the levels because the 500hz and above freq will be extremely effecient.

Before you spend too much money, I would suggest buying 4-16 of them to play around with. I can help you with taming the peaks in the upper freq if you find them too disconcerting.

The drivers are extremely inexpensive, and I haven't played around with them to figure out if acceptable performance can be acheived. So, before making them into an expensive project, lets see what kind of performance we can get. Then buy more!

BTW, there are some 8" DVC subs that may matchup well for adding a little bass. You may just need multiples of those as well.

Dave, your advice about trying a few speakers, before I shell out for 112-144, is very rational and I appreciate it. That being said, I generally prefer to go completely overboard at the drop of a hat. This instance will be the exception as I have decided to hold off altogether after looking over the responce curves (and dips).

All the same I truly appreciate the opportunities you often share.

I don't really have a price range in mind or a definite motivation to upgrade. My current system consists of 10 year old Polks and the Titanic sub.

I have been eyeing GR Research speakers for some time. What do you think of them?

They are pretty nice from what I have heard, although I have never heard them in person.

Did you see the post about the Usher drivers a while back?

Haven't seen you around here in a while!
