My 95 tour was idling bad and stalling after finding a melted pcv hose and replacing it it was running ok until I was in traffic and the tach went to 5000rpms and I diddnt have time to put it into nuetral ... I ran into a toyota truck and my tour was totaled at 35mph!!! te truck only had bent bumper brackets! the bumper did not even have a scratch... the worst part is that my ins paid me 4200 bucks and I owe 5500 bucks so i am without a car until I pay my loan off ..I was a ford fan but I will never buy another one after all the recalls and problems(ex.water pump impellers)and astronomical depritiation. sorry guys(and girls) but the ford contour is in my opinion one of the worst cars I have ever owned .. (I wonder if ralph nader would write a book on the contour(just kidding))good luck to the rest of you suckers ....I mean proud car owners mad wink

Yeah... and judging by your long list of mods, I'd say you put a lot of time into your car.

Seriously though, why come on to an enthusiast site and post about your wrecked tour and how bad it sucked within 15 posts?

Now I've ranted about Contours, this demands attention. Just how does a throttle 'jump up' to 5k? Never heard of that in my life, mainly because the assl'y has a RETURN SPRING (actually more than one, right?). Something was either way the heck outa whack or your foot slipped. My car is a real love/hate thing, like a Ferrari almost, but it drove in the snow at very low temps w/no prob's today, didn't stall, ABS works. Damn thing works fine when I need it to....otherwise, I'd trade the problem ridden thing in 2 sec's. I sure wish they would SVT a Cougar (anyone?). Maybe they could pipe the engine right, and put in a mgmt system that finally fixes all our problems! I would trade in a blink. What IS an SVT Focus? What were they thinking!

The answer to your problem was one that we call brakes. They are controlled by depressing that pedal to the left of the gas. A Contour doesn't have the hp/tq to overpower its brakes. Don't blame your lack of skill in reacting to an emergency on the car. Even if your car jumped to redline you should have been able to safely control the situation. ie. hit the brakes, kill the ignition, shift to neutral. I had a Bronco II (oh god, now that was a sh%^ Ford product) that had a sticky throttle cable in winter. The engine would routinely stick at wide open throttle but I never crashed, just stayed cool and reacted. Always be on guard driving a Ford laugh

funny I don't see if it's MTX or auto. I would assume MTX. Hold it...that still assumes it increased the throttle. No Corvette 'drive by wire' throttle here. H'mm. Can't be a shorted TPS. Were the rear windows up or down at the time?

If we sat here and looked at the transmissions for a second, we would find:

MTX: If in gear the clutch would have to be pushed in, therefore, the engine would just rev and not go forward. Even if it was in neutral, the car wouldn't move.

ATX: If in gear to be stopped the brake has to be depressed, which rock sniffer pointed out, the contour couldn't override the brakes.

Hmmmmmmm...
I don't get why people blame there own driving on the Contours.

The only stuck pedal I know of would be something someone calls a "LEAD FOOT."

Engine accelerates unexpectedly:

1. Push to Neutral: auto has no detent and you can push directly to neutral easily. smile
2. Push in clutch if in gear (MTX while moving in gear) smile
3. STEP ON BRAKE smile
4. Turn the steering wheel to avoid hitting something. smile
5. Turn ignition off smile
6. Panic, close eyes, hit object in front of you eek

Looks like you picked option six!

Why blame the car for your poor choice of response in a serious situation. The car may of misbehaved, but the driver is in control. You chose to give up control in a controllable situation. frown

Maybe looking for someone to say "Me too!" so there's a basis for a suit against Ford. People were willing to believe it against Audi...you KNOW they'd believe it against Ford.
