The answer to your problem was one that we call brakes. They are controlled by depressing that pedal to the left of the gas. A Contour doesn't have the hp/tq to overpower its brakes. Don't blame your lack of skill in reacting to an emergency on the car. Even if your car jumped to redline you should have been able to safely control the situation. ie. hit the brakes, kill the ignition, shift to neutral. I had a Bronco II (oh god, now that was a sh%^ Ford product) that had a sticky throttle cable in winter. The engine would routinely stick at wide open throttle but I never crashed,just stayed cool and reacted. Always be on guard driving a Ford
