This might be a duplicate post. The window dropped out. I am retyping just in case.

Have a '96 GL 2.5V6. Engine races to 1500 RPMs on start and when coming to a stop the engine RPMS do not hold and engine will stall.

Had this problem last year. Mechanic replaced a hose and a part (a valve) in the EGR system I believe.

I want to try to fix this myself. I saw the FAQ
"RPM's hang during shifts and when backing off throttle " in the Driveability section of the problems FAQ. Looks like the problem.

Question is am I on the right track and where may I get the gasket if it fails - at least what I am asking for when I go to get it?

No that's not the same subject. Ford intentionally makes a Duratec hold it's RPMs for a second and lowers them slowly to control emissions when you take your foot off the throttle when DRIVING the car. It's called throttle hang and is designed into the system.
Your problem sounds like something else and I wouldn't attempt to do what the FAQ says....
Good luck.
I'd take it back to mechanic and have him check again.

IIRC, many who have this syptom got cured with an IAC valve cleaning or replacement.
