same here when used to live in T.O. fill up the 'Tour with 94 octane at petro-canada, and drive to Montreal (around 600km) and never ever have i been able to do the hole drive on one tank it took atleast 1 1/2 tank to get here driving at about 120 km/h on cruise control. I don't know how you ppl get over 400 on a single tank

Perhaps the Zetec contours got smaller gas tanks?

Also the "winter" gas gets lower mileage than the regular summer gas. Something to do with whatever additives they put in it.

I followed my friend in his Celebrity once from Ottawa to Toronto and had to hold it under 120, it was quite a noticable improvement in economy compared to avg 130. I've rarely gotten into the 500s on a tank (and that's really pushing it into empty), usually 400s on the hwy and high 300s for city and mixed driving. Re: Ghosst's mileage with his 5.0, I recall on my parent's Buick Roadmaster (the non-LT1 5.7) it would get 800-900 kms on the hwy on its 80L tank, really impressive for a very large car.

The Contiques tanks are the same regardless of engine. As the fuel battle goes. I'm at 462kms on this tank with just a hair above the half mark. The needle is moving a lot quicker now though. I'm starting to think I'll only get around 650 on the full tank but we'll see. As was stated there is a difference between summer and winter fuel though I always thought that it had something to do with fuel line antifreeze. The other big factor which seems to be sucking back the most gas right now is my cold start ups. So far I've had 5 of them on this tank and it seems to make a visible drop via the gas needle.

When I had my V6 5sp SE, I drove up to T.O. with my car FULLY loaded... it was almost on the bump stops. Running premium gas and going a max 110km/h my average was 700km. I didn't want to push it when the light came on, I was in the states (White Mountains) not where I'd want to run out of gas.
The V6's like to run at 3000rpm for best efficinecy.

Best I've done on a tank with the SVT is about 530km of 120-130 km/h of 401 cruising. Took about 48 litres to refill, if I remember.

Note re: defroster making the a/c compressor run--

This goes back to the beginnings of automotive air conditioning. Car makers discovered very early in the game that having the a/c compressor sit completely idle for several months at a stretch had a serious impact on its long-term reliability. To get around it, they hooked things up so the compressor would come on whenever the defroster was used.

Not sure, but running the compressor may also benefit the defrosting process, as the a/c (I think) removes some of the humidity from the air, thus less condensation on der vindows.

Yuor right on the nose about the defrost purpose and function.

Well I'm down to the last quarter of a tank. Actually just shy of a quarter I think. Anyways I have 658km's on the tank and think I may get 75-100 more if I'm lucky. Not at all bad for winter driver if I do say so myself.

Well here is the verdict. I drove 715km's before refilling the 49.45l required to refill the tank. That was all I could cram in the tank. When I filled it last I crammed it too so I think this a rather accurate means for deriving my figures. If I did my math right this works out to 14.45km per liter or 6.92l per 100kms. Not to shabby for winter driving IMHO.

That's pretty darned good!

If you (or anyone else) wants to keep track of their mileage, here's a link to something I made.

Mileage Chart

Your mileage worked out to: 36.148 mpg or 7L/100Km according to my spreadsheet.

For those who don't do metric it works out to be 34mpg. Very impressive.
