Is it possible you removed the clip from the tensioner and allowed the chains to have tension before finishing the cam caps?
Wait! You're not supposed to release the chain tensioner until you have tightened the cams? Damn! I didn't know about that. Good thing mine seems to hold up after 3.4k miles.
