Remove the coolant res and the 'sensor' ,clean the gunk off the inside of the res and sensor, refit & refill.Any gunk can cause fale readings to the optical sensor,if that fails need a new sensor, dirt is the main prblem.....

I've got 123,000 miles and I'm using the green stuff.

I noticed it was fine this morning, but the light came on after about 10 minutes of driving. It's been doing that since they changed the coolant.

I'm going to try cleaning the reservior, but how likely is it that air is still trapped in the system and the bubbles are tripping the sensor?

This is apparently a common problem with Contours. My '99 SVT had an intermittant coolant light warning even though the coolant level was on the mark and the car never overheated. I spoke to a Ford service technician, and all he could say was, "Yeah, we see that a lot." The fix: they flushed the coolant tank. Sure enough, once refilled, the light never came back on. Go figure.

Someone on another thread mentioned that the sensor trips if the specific gravity (coolant concentration) isn't high enough (how they figured this out I'll never know, it's not in the shop manual and it's not in the user's manual).

So I got a coolant hydrometer and sure enough, one of the 5 balls didn't want to float.

So I pumped out about a quart of fluid and added a quart of concentrated coolant.

I went for a 20 mile drive and the light didn't come back on, so I think it's fixed.

I've also heard here (yesterday actually, you can search for it) that the sensor is positioned a little high and if you fill about a half inch over the max line it'll take care of the light...

Mine does the same thing. It seems to do it more often when the car is parked on an incline and then is started.
