What should I use on a stock (E1)(16-6.5) '99 Contour SVT ? I know this is probably a topic that is kicked all over the place. I'm on my last set of KDW's @215-50-16.
Maybe this should be titled "What is the BEST tire for my car?"
1. Dunlop SP Sport A2 @215-55-16.
2. Dunlop SP Sport 5000 @205-55-16.
3. Bridgestone Potenza S-03 @205-55-16.
4. Bridgestone Potenza S-03 @215-55-16.
5 Firehawk SZ50 EP's either 205-55 or 225-50
I like/want handling, low noise, traction dry or wet, and tread life. The Firehogg SZ 205-55 sound good to me... Snow is not here in W.Georgia or E. Alabama.
Let's see what you enthusiasts feel is best.
Sincerely, Tom
Tom

Check my sig. Those tires are excellent, handling virtually the same in the wet as in the dry. I got about 19,000 miles on my first set with a few fun, all day road trips on some nice twisty roads.

KeithW - I see. Those Firehawks gave you just 19,000 miles. Gosh, that's pretty low. I was hoping to expect that brand and model would give between 25K to 30K miles.
The tire Rack reviews and ratings sound so good about them. I see mostly Corvettes and Muskrats are shoed with them. Course a 150 cubic inch Contour aint in the same league. Those tires must be for the "over 300 hp" club.
Are they relatively quiet....?

Before I bought my first set I read the reviews at the Tire Rack, people getting 30 to 40k miles on them. After wearing my first set at a little over 19k I figured those people mainly drove in straight lines. What a waste of a great handling tire. The speed rating of a tire is not just for straight line speed but an indication of how well it handles curves. They are quieter and smoother riding than the OEM Firehawk GTA's that came on the SE Sport. My wife thought that they were a definite improvement in those areas. Talk to Luke at the Tire Rack, there might be better ones out now at that price.

I'm running on those...the assymetricals...unique looking tread and they handle great...treadwear is alright for the profile I guess...I have almost 20,000 on them and not TOO far off the half-tread usage mark. Should be able to get around 35,000 on them depending on how you drive, but I'm no tire expert. Basically, it's a helluva lot better than my stock Firehawk GTAs!
To be honest though, I probably won't go with a high speed rating next time I need tires, too expensive...and I'll probably go to a 225/50 series. Maybe like the Eagle RS-As that are on Grand Ams...

Decetn treadwear, great grip wet and dry, you should look at the Yok AVS ES100. More treadwear than S-03 at lower cost. I'd look for 225/50R16.

Firehawk SZ50 EP's are a thin 225. They should fit without a problem. And if you are concerned with handling and decent tread wear. They would be first on mylist. I loved my non-EP SZ50's!

The problem with America is stupidity.
I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment
for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety
labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I'm really liking what I'm reading about these new ES100. Sounds like a cheap substitute for the SZ50 EP, although I doubt the ES100 will perform as well when the tread gets worn. But they're about 50% cheaper...I think I've made up my mind. Now just have to find a dealer with them in stock. (Tirerack.com is out of stock until Feb something).

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm aiming at 225.50.16. Candidates include SZ50ep, S03, and Yok AVS E100. I went to a Firestone store the other day and they beat Tire Rack price for the SZ50 EP's. They offered me "DRIVE - Out" price of $137.50 per tire! 225.50.16. $550 is a goodly amount of money for a set of tires. I was not "shot-in-the-butt" with buying tires that day, and they were nice enough to give me a written quotation to bring back in future. If it were our Camry, then I'd say "No", I wants Dunlop A2 Sports (H) like we currently have. Brrrr....no cold air intake needed this January day in Georgia...
