Rich. I'm glad you're O.K. To bad the Focus is fucused. I agree on what is being said on Focaljet. You can expect the resistance to a reduced charge to be minimal in court. Yes officers are paid to be in court. However as the Cop told you to fight it makes for a good indicator that he didn't fully beleive in the ticket he was writing. The police are required to write said tickets unless it is very apparent the the accident had nothing to do with you. If the officer can't prove that you did not commit an offense then you need to offer the proof or commentary citing as such. I wouldn't worry yourself sick over this. You may lose a few points but I doubt that you'll lose a full 6. Just remember as well this is why you have insurance. Cars can be replaced but people can't be. (well at least not yet) Good luck.
