Never having anything to do with a FWD car until last month when I bought the SVT.....how does putting the battery in the trunk help a FWD car like this?

Just a general question....Why can't you wait till spring? Got the SVT in hiding/storage? And that is a good question, what does relocating the battery to the trunk accomplish? And congrats on a professional install...

Over 200,000 miles and dead......kinda. Time to get a new ride.

Did you leave connections in the engine bay for jump starting?
Did you vent the battery out of the passenger compartment?

My friend at work and I had this conversation last week (after he told me the old Audi 100 put the battery under the rear seat) and we decided that the pro/con to battery reloc on the Contour is a tough cookie.

For those who are asking ...
The Contour is 63/37 F/R weight distribution. Getting any of that weight out of the front will decrease the tendancy to understeer. Also, is frees up area in front of an open filter for better, cooler breathing.

Nope...I just got an optima (sp)

I didnt know about the weight distribution thanks and also my main reason i ran was for cooler breathing...Heat soak sucks

I agree completely. By using an Optima sealed battery and SS braken, venting is not needed. I'm working on finding a way to retain the from jump points.

Andy W. The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I'm still of the opinion that this is a pretty much useless mod for performance purposes. If you just replace the stock battery with a Dynabatt or similar battery I think you're just as well off with a lot less work and hassles. Look at the reasoning below:

Given the folowing parameters look at the outcome...
63/37 stock weight distribution
3000lbs stock contour weight
40lbs stock battery weight + 5lbs of new cables
15lbs Dynabatt weight with new mount

Ok so we move the stock battery to the back shifting 40lbs off the front, this changes our weigt distribution to:

Front weight with cable .63 * 3005 = 1893
Rear weight with cable 3005 - 1893 = 1112

New front weight distribution (1893 - 40) / 3005 = 61.7 percent

New rear weight distribution = 38.3 percent

Oh, and if you caught on you increased your cars weight due to the extra cabling by 5lbs and managed to change the weight distribution by a meager 1.3 percent!

Now lets just put in a Dynabatt up front and see what happens:

stock rear weight distribution .37 * 3000 = 1110

New rear weight distribution 1110 / (3000 - 40 + 15) = 37.3 percent

New front weight distribution = 62.7%

So we only changed the weight distribution by .3 percent, but decreased the stock cars weight by 25lbs and 30lbs if you put a battery in your trunk. But now we don't have to worry about those 0 gauge lines running in the passenger compartment, or if they are outside we don't have to worry about them getting cut. We don't have to worry about fumes in the passenger compartment or give up any trunk space. It took easily half the time if not 1/5 of the time to do. You now have a leaner car which almost always translates into better handling. You still have the ability to put in a cold air intake or do whatever else you want to because these batteries are so small. I just don't see why people go through the trouble.

wow..........you must have a lot of free time on your hands....also......main reason people put there battery in the trunk is for a cleaner look under the hood and so its better for the air filter to get air a big plus......and HEAT SOAK sucks...

Hey bring the car by so I can check it out Also those who think this mod is dumb, check yourself. Anything that frees up space in that engine compartment is a good thing AND it looks soooo much better, period
