I've heard good things about that grade of oil and I'm thinking about switching to it for winter driving. I'm currently running Mobil 1 5W-30 and having no problems.

Is 5W-30 suitable for summer conditions? I put some in last week, and it seems to be doing fine, and the owner's manual recommends it...

Thats the only grade I have ever put in. Regardless of temp.

Thanks Ken - I was a little concerned, because it is hot here at the moment (around 30C), and I suspect the local Ford dealers use only 20W50 (but I know most of them aren't very good at fixing cars).

mobil1 5w-30, no need (especially in a street contour) for a different weight, synthetic 5w-30 should be fine for almost any real world temperature.

To my knowledge, a 40 viscosity doesn't meet spec for any Contour. I run a 5w-30 synlube in my '98 Duratec and it's been fine for all seasons in my area (N Texas).
But, if you're in an area where winter temps are extreme enough to call for a 0w, I'd recommend a 0w-30, to eliminate the possibility of partial oil-starvation that could occur with a heavier, multi-vis grade.

Over on the Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute forums they are discussing what weight to use too. Some say that Ford specs the new 5w-20 because they want to improve the fuel mileage only. Not concerned about the engine life since the warranty would be up in 3/36 for Ford, 3/50 for Mazda. I've always used 5w-30 synthetic in my last few cars.
