I thought you'd all find this interesting. I noticed that there is a cat recall on my 95 Contour 2.5L GL. The recall states that the precats and the Y pipe along with the hoses that connect to the EGR tube have to be replaced. If the 3 way catalyst converter is plugged then they replace that also. I had a 45 minute discussion with the Ford dealer about this. At first the technician told me that these would be replaced if they found a problem. If no problem found they would charge me $90 for testing. I explained my understanding of the recall and showed him the Dealer letter from Ford as well as the replacement instructions, etc. He went back to the service manager, talked with him and came back saying that the 3 way catalyst has to be checked and replaced if bad. I sent him back to the service manager and then he came back saying the service manager said the exhaust system is one piece and you have to replace it as a whole. I good naturely said that was just plain wrong and asked to talk to the service manager myself. I had to go over the letter point by point and show the labor breakdown and Ford instructions before this guy yielded!!!!! Why are the dealers so difficult in performing warranty work like this? I wouldn't be in there if Ford did not issue the recall????

This recall applies to all 95 and 96 Contours with 2.5L engines. On 96's they will replace the exhaust manifolds both of them and the 3 way catalyst if it is bad.
In my situation, they agreed to replace the 2 precat exhaust mainfolds and the y pipe (this is for 95 only) They will also check the 3 way catalyst and if it is bad replace it.
If you want the recall number etc and I can get if for you.

You should purchase a Haynes manual for your car. It will give you the details you need. Also, for $20.00 a year or so. You can subscribe to www.alldata.com. They will provide repair info, recall info, etc on your car. It is well worth it. There are a potential large number of recalls on your car and its best to get them done before you exceed mileage limits, etc. Regards, Bob T.

The reason the dealerships are acting this way and need their hands held is because they hate having cars in for recalls. The bottom line is THEY MAKE NO MONEY on the recall so they just tend to forget and do a shabby job. Well, time to go back to the dealership and pick up my car, hopefully. Had a recall and a recall and some other BS done with it.
JustinBoots to help you with finding your engine look on it, what does it say Zetec(which is a 2.0L I4) or Duratec(2.5L V6). Most GL's come with the Zetec engine, which would not be under the recall.

Terry is correct. Govt standard says 8 years/80K miles, and I am on my third and last set...nest time they get gutted, and new underbody cats go on (gonna do an exhaust when it happens)....my car has no warranty left, so I have no recours but to get rid of crap stock parts....and maybe a new engine eh?
Just call me Judge. People suck. Life begins at 170mph...until that point it is just boring.....
