A DMD has become an OEM component on the latest 2.5 Duratec Mondeo engines. It reduces vibrations in 2 frequency ranges which are known to be destructive to the crankshaft. The "dual mode" part is derived from the second ring which is depressed on to the front of the original OEM damper to help dampening in a second frequency range. This helps eliminate destructive vibrations over 3000 RPM.
The DMD reduces the possibility of a vibration induced engine failure and lessens the effects of crank whip which can extend bearing life and theoretically reduce bearing related oil failure problems.
Another advantage of the DMD is that the engine feels smoother and more refined. It is especially noticeable above 4000 RPM. Another theoretical advantage is that by reducing vibrations and crank flex you reduce the parasitic loss from such actions and therefore lose less power to it.
Nice write-up Demon, I'm sold. Anything to prolong the life of my SVT!
