Sometimes ( 50% of the time ) when I shift into 3RD gear
quickly it makes a grinding sound. Has anyone else experianced this problem ? Also can it be fixed under warrenty ? Thanks for yur help.

3rd gear syncro.

Yes it's happened before

I would try changing the fluid first. It should be changed often.

If it is a syncro going out "technically" it should be covered under the warranty. It just may take a fight with Ford.

Is the sound pretty evident or are you mistaking the sound with how the stick feels in your hand?? (some of us make that mistake so just making sure). Yeah, i agree check the fluid, change it and mix up the "cocktail" with FORD FRICTION MODIFIER if you haven't tried that already, worked instantly on my SVT. Third gear always gave me grief.

yeah try the cocktail, I think my dealer told me it was around $1200 to repair a first gear synchro since it involves a tranny tear down and all.

Happened to my second gear shortly after I bought the car....$1200 repair wasn't a good start....extended warranty paid for it luckily.

What exactly is in the "cocktail?"

How often should I change the fluid?

Change fluid every 40k I'd suggest. Here is the link to the cocktail. I suggest Mobil 1 w/ 2 oz. of the friction modifier.
