I am more then certain that all contours/mystiques use the MTX75 or the CD4E, MTX and ATX
the cougar uses the same since they are basically the same car
- 95 Mystique LS - Zetec/5spd
- 99 Contour SeVT Sport - Duratec/5spd

MTX-75
All Contour manual trans cars use the MTX-75 as well as the Zetec powered Focus. The V6 bell housing on the trans is different from the Zetec so only a V6 trans is the same as the SVT trans. Slso the shift tower is different on the 98 and newer compaired to the 95 to 97 because of the difference in shift linkage (rod verses cable).

The Probe uses the MTX-75 as well. Of course in your case you would have to find a Probe GT because of the bell houseing differences talked about earlier!
I would suggest staying as new as possible, even going reman if can afford it. You will probaly find that going with a reman tranny will not cost much more when all is said and done then buying one from a jumkyard and having that one rebuilt six months later.
Good luck!

I'm pretty sure that the Probe uses a Japanese manual transmission, not the European MTX-75. I think the Probe trans is similar to or nearly the same as the Taurus SHO trans.

Probe would use the same trans as the Mazda MX-6. I am not sure if that is the MTX-75 or not?

Nope, that's a different trans. I've had one out of both a Probe and my SVT before. Totally different.

Make sure to get a post-2000 MTX-75, ford made major revisions for longevity and smoothness. Anythign between 98-early 2000 has weaker synchros, poorer qaulity shift towers, etc. However they all have the same crappy differential that is the weak point of the trans. If yours is out make sure to have a Quaife differential properly installed by Terry Haines or someone you can trust that will re-do it for free if they screw it up. With a post 2000 and Quaife it makes for a strong trans.
I went the extra mile and had Terry install the taller zetec FD ratios, these lower the revs for the same speed, now 55mph is at 2 grand flat, makes for a pleasent ride, but also helps me put more power to the ground.
I offer PnP Heads for all durtec's details at PnPheads.com or jesse@pnpheads.com for details.
