Hello all
I have a 98 SE duratec with ATX. When the battery was changed recently, I noticed a small diameter black rubber hose lying loose near the battery. I thought it might need to be connected somewhere, but cannot find anything to connect to.
The manual does not detail this hose.
The hose connects to the transmission below the battery, on a black metal bolted on cover to the transmission.
If you know what this hose is used for and any connection point, I would appreciate your advice.
John
P.S. While I was just a guest on these forums they have already helped me a lot in solving problems with the Contour. Thanks!

That's exactly what it is... a breather hose for the tranny. It just sits there, not connnected to anything else

Welcome onboard.
The vent hose just sits on the top of the rear battery hold down bolt, with the open end pointing down. There should be a small plastic clamp that holds the hose and slips over the threads of the bolt.

Thanks
Now I can change the transmission oil and not worry about the hose, would any type of filter like a small gas filter help to keep dirt out of the transmission?
I plan to use the drain and fill and drain method detailed here in the forum to change the transmission oil

never heard of the need for a filter on the vent hose, most likely has a valve that won't allow anything to flow into the tranny through the hose.

That vent hose must not be on early models, cause my car doesn't have one.... the only thing mine has which is obviously a transmission vent is located on top of the transmission itself... need to remove the battery tray to see it. It has something similar to a bottle cap crimped down so that it loosely covers where I assume the vent tube on your models goes.

BTW when I discovered it, it was surrounded by dirt build-up and the cap didn't move as freely as after cleaning... probably why they changed to a hose.
