so true. I considered buying one before the SVTC but they were only available in atx, horrid handling, and they're so common. I didn't find it too hard to sacrifice .5 second in the 1/4 and get the Contour.
Exact same thing here! I test drove one just to satisfy my curiousity when I was looking for a new car. I hated it! Floaty, boat like handling with no feel of the road and no control of the gears since it's a slushbox. Yes the old Buick engine makes some decent power, but the many other downfalls vastly overcome that. Then there's the tacky cheap plastic interior. It's definitely not a driver's car! Hence why I bought the SVT. It is a driver's car.

It was not broke; Yet I fixed it anyway.

So the GTPs really aren't that much faster than SVTs eh? Interesting...I was also considering one as my next car for a while...but after hearing you guys say they handle like crap, I couldn't take one...my motto is what's the point in having the power if you can't corner with it??? Sounds like a signature quote...

I'm actually interested in one, the new GTP Comp G or whatever it is. The one that has 270HP and has pad shifter.

You mean the glorified 4T65-E, heat-generating fluid-coupling slushbox, right? The Hydra-matic's a good slushbox, but a slushbox it is. Next, please...

If the GTP you're referring to with the "ricer" wing on it is red with a checkered flag graphic on the side, it is not stock by any means. It is owned by Zoom, who is also the owner of ZZPerformance in Grand Rapids. And yes he is running 11's. (fastest one in the nation)

A friend of mine bought a 2001 back in June...since then we've put Koni's with eibach springs, larger swaybars front & back, poly bushings, and strut tower braces front & back. Total cost $1050. It's a completely different car now. No body roll at all & it feels 500 pounds lighter. We weren't going to put the larger front bar on, but stock it had the tendancy to oversteer a bit and my friend didn't feel comfortable with that, so we put the larger front bar on it's damn near perfectly neutral now. I'd say it handles at least 2x better than my 96 SE.

I think its true that suspension mods can make any car handle decent, even SUVs. But, doing the same degree of suspension work to a Contour would put it back ahead by the same margin...better chassis, better steering, and 500 lbs less weight than GTP cannot be easily overcome. And you still got that damn ATX and no LSD availability.
