I have had my 98 Contour in the shop all week now to get the timing belt changed. The new belt snapped almost immediatly, so the repair place changed the pulleys. The belt then shredded again, so the repair place looked deeper and found the cam assist mechanism wasn't functioning properly. After several conversations with Ford motor company, it was determined that this must be a factory problem. Adding to this is the fact that one Mercury dealer in town had a kit to fix this problem, including a new solenoid. Very curious. Anyone have a problem like this or any suggestions?? A thousand bucks is a huge bite, so Ford will fix this for free if this is there problem.
Thanks!

Kenny,
What is a "VCT"?
I have a 1996 Contour 4 cyl. with 60k miles. It is in the shop for a loud timing belt noise. Any idea what the problem is?

If what you mean by a timing belt noice is a tapping noice then it is the belt hitting the cover. My car dos this on colder days. My car has 96 thousand on it and is still running great but I plan to change the timing balt soon, from what I have read it happens to some people and not others, nothing to worry about unless it happens all the time

VCT's go bad????
OH NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
And here I sit laughing at you losers who have to deal with EGR valves!!!!
Oh well.
No, those of you who have pre -98 Zetecs don't have VCT, you have EGR's. EGR's suck because they have to be cleaned after a while, yet the VCT thing should last forever. Apparently, it does not.
VCT was a short lived thing, and is sporadic. There is no rhyme or reason as to which car gets it and which does not. I used to think there was, until I found that the newer Black valve cover Zetecs are sometimes VCT equipped.
It's a mess...
