Here's the background: notchy in all gears, occassionally couldn't get into any gear when stopped at red light or toll booth, ack!

Ford serviced with new tranny.. same problem. Can't tell if they put the right fluid in, was not really honey colored or red, sort of in between.

But here's what happened: I replaced fluid with Redline D4 ATF + friction mod according to the cocktail and shifter got 80% better immediately. About 5 days later I accidentally pulled out into traffic after long day at work in 3rd and ended up burning the clutch a bit to get going. Now it shifts great! Really smooth in all gears and no getting caught in neutral anymore (so far).

Can anyone explain this? I don't know enough..

When's the last time you flushed/changed you brake fluid? It uses the same reservoir as the clutch system. Old degraded fluid can cause all sorts of problems.

Change it every 2 years. It is very susceptible to moisture!

Yeah good tip, but actually I replaced the brake fluid with ATE Super Blue and bled the clutch in late October. It made no noticable difference in shifter feel.

Can someone define what "notchy" means for me? I feel stupid asking, but I really don't know. Thanks.

well, for me, there was resistance on the shift lever when trying to engage the synchros, then it would sort of "detent" where it felt like it was in gear, but wasn't. I'd have to apply more pressure before it would actually drop all the way into gear.

In short, it kinda felt like I was trying to move the shift lever through a bucket of ice cubes.

I think I got it... almost feels like the shifter gets stuck between the syncro and the actual gear?
Thanks!
