The underneath sound insulation comes in two thicknesses in the UK, I have the 2inch stuff its the only way to store your flat tyre and keep the top surface level, there is also two types of material used one is rigid foam the other the standard soft cloth, I think the two thicknesses only appeared on the MK2 UK Mondeo, My first Mondeo 1993 didn't have thick foam even though it came with Alloy wheels, I have seen cars with no under insulation at all and when you drop the Grey mat and Water shield trunk liner it looks a real mess.
