Crank vs at the wheels is where the translation is getting muddled. A typical Vortech install on an SVT nets around 265FWHP. That's around 320-325 at the crank.

Hey Demon how much of that actually hits the wheels? Becasue I see some dyno's talking about 265 to 280 hp, but the graphs don't explain which HP and tourqe it is. Weather is Flywheel, crank, or wheel's. Roz

When you say at the crankshaft, that implies that it includes the flywheel. So it is either at the crank/flywheel or at the wheels. Most people accept a 15-17% loss of power due to the drivetrain components so if you multiply your crank power by 83-87% then you get the estimated wheel hp. Mostly we calculate the other direction from wheel back to crank so that we can more accurately compare our measurements to manufacturers. All the ratings from the manufacturer are at the crank which is a bit deceptive considering the many types of drivetrains out there, i.e. all wheel drive, front and rear wheel drive.

FWHP = Front Wheel Horse Power or HP the front tires put to the ground
We reverse figure a dyno's numbers to get an decent estimation of what the net power rating is at the crankshaft (manufacturers rated power)
For the MTX Duratec you add around 22% to the dyno numbers (or divide the dyno numbers by .82) to get the crank numbers. (17-18% loss)
Torque loss is about half that. It's roughly add +10-12% to the dyno numbers. (9-10% loss)

Most people who go to the dragstrip for their first time are always bummed at the end of the day, because they always expected much better than they got. Just go and do the best that you can, but the fact is, you probably wont do as well as you thought you should have. Most people who think they will get 14s will wind up getting something in the 16 second range on their 1st test-n-tune day. You'll probably have to go a few weekends in a row to get to where you can drive it good enough to acheive the min ET for your car (especially with a manual trans). This is just based on my experiences. I used to drag race for years, a long time ago, and I've seen a thousand (exaggeration) kids who come to the track for their first time with their BUILT-up hot rods and they thought for SURE they'd get 12s or 11s, and they would always leave with anywhere from a 13 to a 17! But you wouldn't go to their pits and just talk $hit to them, no no. You'd (or I'd) always go over to their pits and encourage them to not get discouraged, and to come back again next weekend, and try again, and keep trying. And usually, within a few weeks, these guys (the ones who didn't give up) would finally work their cars down to that realistic level (usually still not as low as they had originally expected), where they finally came to grips with the reality of REAL racing. The clock doesn't lie. Just don't get your hopes up too high! Not 'til you go once

Boy is there a lot of truth in what you say!
I've been to the drag stip only once, and my first runs sucked so bad I turned a 16.4 with my 3L engine! I only got one more run that night 'cause it was so crowded, but in that next run I turned a 15.46, and it still sucked! I remember my R/T being 1.5 seconds for the last one and .... you get the point. Funny thing is on the 15.46 second run, I ran down a 95 mustang GT and ended up with a 92-93 mph trap speed (for the win I might add). I expect to do much better now since someone pointed out that I can start to go on the last yellow light before the green.
I'm learning! Any more tips appreciated.
Funny thing is, I can build the hell out of an engine, or almost anything on the car...but I don't know jack about drag racing.

Someone ought to do a good write up on tips for drag racing and have the admins make it note so it stays up top in this forum. I don't have time right now.
If it's just a street night/test and tune thing and you're just looking for a good time, don't worry as much about your reaction time. It has no effect on your 1/4 times.

Practice. Other than the lights, it's all about making the car go. Run out each gear fully and shift quickly. Live on the edge of wheel hop on the starts (do you Quaife?). Above all - always go as straight as you can.
Your Mustang story reminds me of running a 60-something Vette (prolly a 289 or smaller) to a clean heads up win after giving him a head start at the light. Feels good to actually beat a classic every once in a while.

Well Demon, I proved tonight that a little practice goes a long way, but good engine building skills can make up for my racing deficiencies. After tonight, I'm willing to race now. I just posted my best ET of 14.86 @ 95.96 MPH! I am so thrilled. You saw my stereo system with the 4 tens and two amps? Well I left ALL of it in but I pulled the spare tire. Not much of a trade-off. Oh well, for my second night to the drag races I did well. I am learning a lot since I got about 9 runs in. I will be able to better that time, I think I can hit 14.5 with a little more practice. If I can't beat you in technique then I'll just make it more powerfull...Guess what I got in the MAIL TODAY???? :D:D warmonger
