Now that I have my new killer head unit(See previous post) I worry about theft. I have two questions. Is the Ford/Mercury Alarm system worth anything or is it just a Blinkin' light? Is removal of the face plate a real deterrent or are faceplates readily available? Thanks

Faceplates are generally a PITA to get. Always remove it and take it with you.

My wife took off the faceplate and put it in the glovebox, so the thief popped the stereo, opened the glovebox, and took off. If it wasn't there, I'd probably only have to replace a broken window as opposed to a broken window and HU.

AFIK, the blinking light does just that --- blinks.

If a thief sees the blinking light he'll test the alarm first. If there is one and it chirps at him when he taps the car he usually moves on if he didn't see anything really interesting, If no alarm sounds he will take his time and look closer after he broke your window or popped the lock.
