I know they make a very thick insulating paint that can be applied to the heatshield, i think it would be rather easy

It is a good idea but why not close the back too..full enclosed airbox (John Miks made a special full airbox out of same plastic he uses for his smaller heatshields and it works great. I dynoed with hood DOWN and along with 75mm MAF and airtube mods made 12 HP more than stock.. most people dyno open air filters hood up which helps them alot!!) All you need then is to just run a ram air duct to the side of the airbox or through the fenderwell opening OR just enlarge the stock fenderwell duct & you have the optimal system. BTW, I have done thermometer testing around the engine compartment...it is slightly cooler toward your back opening but not much...the radiator wash just bonces off the firewall and will enter your shield from the back. Got to keep ALL the engine bay air out..its all hot!

A full enclosure airbox is better than stock SVT airbox in 3 ways..
1) you use a bigger filter than the small stock style K&N
2) bigger box gives more space for air to circulate around filter (stock is very tight..)
3) you can mod the fenderwell duct for more air.

Personally, I think the metal composition is not that big of a deal as the air is really moving fast so minimal time to heat it. Plastic, CF is a bit better though.

But at least you closed the bottom..I do not think weapon R did..which is idiotic.

Hey guys thanks for all the positive response! Chad and I are still working on these things trying to make the most effective unit possible. We are still refining the design of the heat shields based on testing we are doing. We've got access to a Raytech infared pyrometer and some digital thermometers that we are using to measure temps inside and outside the shielded area. We are looking to see how effective the shields are in real world use. All results are going to be documented on our website, which should be up shortly.

We are aware of peoples concern about the use of aluminum. We are going to provide answers to peoples questions with documented proof of the shields effectiveness. And we may even have a secret heat barrier coating that would eliminate ANY fear of heat transfer thru the shield.

Stay tuned...more to come!

And here is another teaser pic:

Alex: if you or Chad need any help with this, I may be able to assist, plus I would love to help. Hit me up with an e-mail, and I would be glad to come down to Boulder or Denver. Hell I may even give you a little ride in the 3.0.

Why build a convection oven for your air filter. Use something that does not absorb & transfer heat so efficiently.
I wouldn't be surprised if it actually increased heat soak at low speeds. At any speed without a cold air draw from the front.

How about some independant temperature reading tests.

True, true, though I do admire the idea, I will have to subside with Demon and say that for the cost that you spent on building that and the filter you could have built a setup like I have and be drawing forced cold air into your intake above 45 MPH and cold fresh outside air below 30MPH. Ram Air brought to you by our friends at RACTIVE.
Anyone need more info? PM me anytime. Peace.

That looks just like the SHO Shop heatshield, which is also made of aluminum and works pretty decently.
