go listen to almost any 4cyl engine closely, it's a quiet and normal ticking.(i know plenty of people with new 4cyl engines, it's a normal sound). a 6cyl with same miles as a 4cyl won't make the same sound.

funny my sisters Zetec Focus didn't do it when it was new... does now but she has about 45k on it... mine didn't do it when I first got it either.. mine started around 50k went away at 51k when I took the cover off the cam gears.

Is it a case of replacing both of the pulleys or just bearings etc.?
mk1 mondeo- focus pipe, green cotton induction meshed front end and valance, coming up new alloys

maybe we're talking about different things then, every 4cyl i've heard has a quiet ticking.

I think that quiet ticking you are referring to is probably the fuel injectors. However, before i had the timing belt replaced, my car made a ticking noise from the idler pully, well that was replaced and it is now gone w/ the exception of the faint ticking sound from the injectors.

Yeah, my injectors have been pretty loud lately. I guess they need a good cleaning.
